Description:
Megadeth’s sixth album is actually not very far removed from its predecessor (1992’s “Countdown To Extinction”). It continues in the direction of that album, with slower, less-thrashy, more commercial and melodic songs. Plus, “Youthanasia” sounds slick and over-produced. Thus, this is arguably one of Megadeth’s least strongest albums. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, though, because it does feature some classic gems (i.e. “A Tout Le Mode” is arguably one of Dave Mustaine’s best written songs), some great guitar work (like in “Train of Consequences”), and a few very catchy choruses (as in “Elysian Fields”). “Reckoning Day” is a slowly thrashing song with a memorable opening riff, “Train of Consequences” shows off Mustaine’s jazzy vocals as well as a superb guitar solo, “Blood of Heroes” has an acoustic opening riff, and “Black Curtains” is an interesting song which is lyrically about nuclear war. So, it may not be as popular as “Countdown to Extinction,” (it’s not as good, either), but this is yet another solid Megadeth release, a worthy follow-up, and it’s a must own for all Megadeth collections.
